NCC Candidates Responses 2004 What is the biggest youth issue in Nelson? If you were elected, what would you do about it? Colin Aitken There are always issues that affect the youth and council do address a lot of them. Drinking, car hoons in my opinion are the biggest issues. Continue to assist the Police in trying to control but also communicate with the youth and parents in an attempt to work with them and cut out a lot of the costs that have to be passed on to ratepayers. Ian Barker The threat of P methamphetamine. The need to provide real meaningful career opportunities in Nelson. Support setting up the Seafood Centre of Excellence (Specialised University) and similar projects in Nelson That law organisations educate the whole community about P, the warning signs to look for and the dangers of this evil thing in our society Arthur Bradbury Youth suicide rate in Nelson highest in world. Youth are causing some major problems in the community 60% of crime carried out by offenders under the age of 18. Establish a helpline 7/24 (sic) with follow up service. They need to become a part of the community, be important to the community, and to become involved in developments they care about. Support and develop H.U.B. Gail Collingwood From my perspective, getting the Hub back on its feet providing for needs identified by youth combined with high quality services focused on under 25 year olds. Biggest issue for youth is Choices, which influence their future directions and level of contribution to society... [Abridged.] Continuing to work towards this to provide for all youth regardless of social status. Ensure they have access to good information to make choices for lifestyle, recreation, education, employment, health & spiritual needs. Mike Cotton Eric Davy The apparent lack of direction and objectives by many young people. Leads to boredom and apathy I have been a supporter of The Hub. However I think we need to instil in the family, the assistance that is available to provide support. This will encourage goal setting and vision by the youth. I will strive to continue my support for The Hub. Stephen Enger Anne Fitzsimon Boredom! Need affordable/cheap places to hang out, affordable/cheap activities to do in a safe environment, regular and frequent all ages gigs, to empower our youth to find their strengths and build self-esteem. Support The Hub, Youth Council and Health Action fully. Encourage wider community to develop relationships with these groups via sponsorship, volunteers and membership. Encourage relationships between youth and older people. Ivan Ford Drugs and alcohol and possibly boy racers I would meet with the groups concerned and by consultation find a pathway through your areas of concern Jan Fryer Whether the young people can afford to stay here for their tertiary education and can afford to live here ie affordable housing It is a problem associated with growth but I think we need to raise awareness and advocate with central government for higher living allowances for growth Allan Griffiths Unemployment and low wages Encourage young people learning about self promotion and the opportunities available Lyn Harris Hogan Huge concern about alcohol and drugs Boy and girl racers Suicide, health and well being and the safety of young people Insufficient facilities as well as activities Be involved in community and have an awareness of issues Discuss these at council Fully consult with community and continue to talk with young people Denise Henigan Lack of activities/spaces for 12-18 year olds and a means of getting there. Decent public transport to enable independent movement Through involvement in yata work with schools to improve understanding about afterballs. Improve public transport and continue support for the recreational side of the hub. Roma Hippolite Mark Holmes I believe that the funding for youth affairs in the city to be pitiful [abridged]. The issues surrounding the Hub are a good example of the strain on funding. I would also like to make a mention of late night binge drinking. I would certainly push for a move to divert some of these funds in the direction of youth activities. I would therefore campaign to have bars close earlier (not later as currently being suggested) and people will naturally go out earlier thus avoiding a lot of the late night. Bob Houston One can never take the parents out of the youth equation, but the prime issues to me are a) a venue for youth that they WANT to attend, & b) the booze question. Listen to, and look to become part of the Youth Council, because I believe that they have a lot to offer. Having 4 kids 18 & 24, been there, done that! Robert Latimer Errol Millar Nothing to do! & Boredom. A lack of facilities/Amenities for youth. Nowhere for young people to show off their cars (Boy racers). Provide regular events (ie Drive-in concerts!) Ensure the Hub firstly survives, then is expanded. Find "racers" a site! Don Murray Ann Nighy Drink and drugs. Youth who don't have hobbies. Continue with the Hub. Show them self worth of learning leisure skills. Roger Raizada Derek Shaw I don't presume to know what the biggest youth issue in Nelson is. I would like the Youth Council, Health Action and Nelson Youth to tell council what they think is the biggest issue. Hugh Simonsen Bingeing on alcohol, (although they don't recognise it) Gathering in carparks because nowhere else to go. Youth orientated venues: Eg the Hub. Youth activities eg New Year Celebration. Jeremy Smith Ignorance and selfish apathy Completely change youth council, The Hub, attitude of youth council toward youth. Grahame Thorne I don't know the answer. My 16yr old seems to be quite happy with his lot. But I am keen to know what other young people think. I would keep the communication lines open between me and the youth. I have 5 children, so do have some experience. Alan Turley Drugs Keep encouraging the police and any agencies involved in the fight against drugs. Trish Witt Drugs and Alcohol Good kids often given bad image from few bad kids Need more safe places at night Continue to talk with young people. MAYORAL CANDIDATES What is the biggest youth issue in Nelson? If you were elected, what would you do about it? Paul Matheson To ensure facilities and the voice of young persona are acknowledged ie new skateboard park at Paru Paru Road, continue to support Youth Council Continue to have voice at council, support and listen to young voices, continue to support Hub Karen Dean Denise Hennigan Lack of activities/spaces for 12-18 year olds and a means of getting there. Decent public transport to enable independent movement. Through involvement in yata work with schools to improve understanding about afterballs. Improve public transport and continue support for the recreational side of the hub. Gary Watson Not enough things to do and authorities often treat our young as criminals such as the boy and girl racers Find a place for our young boy and girl racers to have fun involve our young in decisions on what they want not what older people think the young people want.
