Help For Young People @ Events & in their Gathering Spaces

H.Y.P.E.-G.S.- is a youth-focused Health and Safety Team providing support to reduce alcohol- and drug-related harm at events.

Who is H.Y.P.E.-GS?

The H.Y.P.E.-GS. crew is made up of people interested in working with young people and passionate about providing a healthy and safer environment.  We inform and liase with young people at events to minimise potential harm.

HYPE is not into policing, judging or preaching to young people, but to support and work alongside young people.

How H.Y.P.E.-GS. came about:

Due to alcohol-related health and safety issues for young people during a previous New Year's Eve period, Nelson City Council (NCC) in partnership with Health Action decided to establish a team of trained and experienced local Youth Workers to support young people at youth events.

Currently: H.Y.P.E.-GS. works at a range of events from after-ball parties, to raves, to outdoor day events, Rockquest, The Cusp and more. NCC also contracts  H.Y.P.E.-GS. to work in places like the Maitai Motor Camp, Tahuna Beach, & city streets during summer.

Our Night/Day: usually involves building relationships with the party-goers in the early hours.  We tell young people about laws and limits around alcohol and other drugs so they can make positive choices.
We inform them if there is a  H.Y.P.E.-GS. Chill Out Zone, and that if they have any worries they can come to us.
We often hand out water and also have blankets, cellphone access, condoms, first aid links and more.
We will advocate for young people, if requested, in dealings with security, event organisers or police.
Just come up and say "Hi" if you see us at work - and if you're interested in becoming part of the team read on...

What will you get from working at these events:

Training ~ all H.Y.P.E.-GS. team members attend training that covers workers' roles and responsibilities, event policy, boundaries, information sharing, role playing, safety and more.

Experience ~ Practical hands on experience working alongside young people and other Youth Workers.  An opportunity to build the Youth Worker Community and promote Youth Work to the Nelson community.

Fun! ~ An opportunity to work with a dynamic group of people and interact with members of the public at some great events.
