Youth Mental Health Project

HeadStrong Youth Advisory Group

Evaluation Report 2004

Background: In 2004 the HeadStrong Youth Advisory Group (YAG) was a close knit and smaller group than in previous years.  The group's members had been involved for some time and realised they needed to recruit for 2005 but were keen to keep the group closed for the 2004 year.  This meant we had four members for the year.

The Youth Advisory Group (YAG) is in its fifth year now and has been an integral part of the project since the beginning.  The YAG is a point of connection to young people in Nelson and also advises the Project Co-ordinator on project directions and strategies.
There has always been a real energy amongst the groups each year to be hands on involved in the project work.  Hence the YAGs initiating the school assembly presentations to destigmatise mental illness, the development of the sUSstained youth art exhibition, and the concept and development work on the Check Yourself Don't Wreck Yourself
campaign.
The group are pivotal to the success and accountability of the HeadStrong
project.

Youth Advisory Group (YAG) Evaluation Method

The group were left alone for half an hour to complete an exercise involving questions and post its.  Anonymity was ensured as a mix of pens and coloured post it's were available.  They were encouraged to be as honest as possible in their responses.

Summary of results

"Being part of the group" responses indicate that being involved in making change and community service is important to the YAG.  The fact that some of the group have to travel in from Stoke and Richmond was identified as one of the down sides and having meetings in town was a barrier.

The group's perception of their purpose was to help people, make suggestions, to advise Health Action and to create better mental health for young people.  This purpose was identified as being positive and relevant to the group.  One suggestion was put forward that the group could become more involved in the community.

The group were happy with the organisation of meetings and suggested that having greater frequency before sUSstained annually was useful.  Monthly was suggested as a regular frequency.

Some members use email and others don't but all agreed that phone calling works for them.  None commented on needing more contact with the co-ordinator or each other.  All felt listened to in meetings.

Other suggestions from the group were to grow the sUSstained exhibition and also have stilt walkers at the opening.  Also better promotion of the project, sUSstained and Check Yourself Don't Wreck Yourself as they felt some people don't know of their existence.
