Name

What is the biggest youth issue in Nelson?

If you were elected what would you do about it?

Sharon Brinsdon

Ross Butler

Providing job opportunities for which youth are suited, educated and passionate about.  (I think lots of health/stress/crime challenges caused by lack of suitable employment)

Use organisations like Nelson Bays Business education partnership Trust to get employers and schools together

Judy Crowe

Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drugs (asked my 18year old son)

Listen to the groups working with youth and prioritise resources available to help them in their work

Roma Hippolite

Liz Hirst

Increased use and abuse of alcohol and drugs (particularly in youth less than eighteen years of age)

Support The Hub.  Support local research (by Health Action) and the development of a strategy to be implemented to reduce, control and prevent the issues and problems arising from the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs.

John Inder

  1. Alcohol & drug addiction and abuse
  2. youth suicides and depression
  3. childhood violence and sexual abuse
  4. obesity disorders in childhood and adolescence

I will direct as much of our new funding as possible to increase the number of health workers in these fields to deal with the problems ( bearing in mind that the DHB is currently in a deficit situation)

Lynette Jones

Lois Jane McTaggart

John Moore

1. Not enough to do

2. health issue obesity and inactivity

1. Continue working for good sporting/recreational and cultural facilities

2. Promote healthy lifestyle choices through education, health promotion and community design

Colin Murray

Lack of meaningful opportunities.  No recognition of youths potentials, aspirations, hopes in knowing they are needed, valued in this region!

NZ needs social justice.  Youth needs meaningful rewarding work here, be valued for who they are and trying to succeed.

Kirsty Prichard

Liz Richards

There are a number of issues for youth, access to health services and housing are two that concern me.

Continue to listen to what young people are saying, and work towards addressing those needs.

Christine Tuffnell

Stress in school or relationships, use of alcohol and drugs, and poor nutrition are all contributing factors to mental health problems.

If elected, what I would do about it;
* education in relationships, alcohol and drugs,
suicide prevention
* healthy lifestyles programme
* ensure access to counselling and mental health services

Anne Turley

Boredom and drug abuse.  Cannabis loses motivation, alcohol and stimulants rob youth of their ability to reach full potential

I would encourage youth to look after their health, enjoy life, have fun, keep fit and care for others

Ruth Vause

Lifestyles issues for our youngsters

Particular risk activities ie Motor vehicle accidents, access to alcohol and drugs and STDs.

I would like to see social workers and health workers in our secondary and intermediate schools.  I believe the PHO needs to address these access issues for young people - ie accessing medical and social services coupled with lifestyle education
